Root canal treatment (endodontics) preserves teeth:

/  During endodontic treatment (canal root treatment procedure), the inside of the tooth is treated.

Inside the tooth, beneath the enamel and a hard layer called dentine, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp is a complex of blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue that forms the hard structure of the tooth during tooth development and growth.

The pulp extends from the crown of the tooth to the root. The pulp is very important during tooth growth and development. However, when a tooth is fully mature, it can survive without a pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues around it.

If the pulp becomes infected, inflammation occurs and treatment is required.

During endodontic treatment, the infected pulp is removed, the inside of the root canal is thoroughly cleaned and shaped, then a filling is inserted and the cavity is sealed. In some cases during root canal treatment temporary filling is placed.

Later, you need to visit a prosthodontist who will make and place a dental crown or perform a tooth restoration to restore full teeth function. After these procedures, the tooth will look like any other healthy tooth.

Root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) is necessary when:

/  The pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes infected and inflamed. Inflammation or infection can have various causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures or cracks/fissures in the tooth. In addition, tooth inflammation can be caused by external damage to the tooth, even if no external cracks or fissures are visible. If inflammation of the pulp occurs and is not treated, an abscess may form, which may required dental abscess incision and drainage, and the tooth may have to be removed, which can slow further treatment as teeth removal healing process can take some time.

/  There is pain, continued sensitivity to heat or cold, sensitivity to touch or chewing, tooth discoloration and swelling of lymph nodes, increased wetness and tissue and tooth sensitivity.

/  There are no symptoms, but diseases are detected during a dental examination. Regular dental examinations are necessary if the disease is to be detected in time.

Painless root canal treatment

Endodontic procedures are designed to relieve pain caused by inflammation or infection of the pulp. Thanks to modern technology and painkillers, patients usually do not feel anything during the procedure.

The tooth may be sensitive for the first few days after the treatment, especially if the pulp of the tooth was infected and painful before the procedure. Unpleasant sensations can be reduced with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Our specialists only work with a microscope

Root canal treatment with a microscope is a reliable method and greatly facilitates the process and ensures its successful outcome:

/  Helps the doctor make a diagnosis and provide an effective treatment plan.
/  Coaxial lighting is used – the light is precisely and concentrated. In this way, all the smallest details of the root canal can be seen.
/  Using 25x microscopic magnification, the treatment becomes precise, which increases the effectiveness of the treatment and results last for a long time.
/  When root canal treatment is performed under a microscope, the risk of tooth fracture or tooth breakage is minimized.
/  During treatment with a microscope, healthy tooth structures are almost untouched and maximally preserved.
/  Old root canal fillings that are no longer suitable can be removed with great success and completely filled again with even greater precision.
/  It is possible to clean and fill root canals with an unusual shape and root canals that are not visible to the naked eye.
/  Surgical instruments left in the root canal from previous treatments can be removed.

How is root canal treatment performed?

If you are wondering what does root canal treatment involve and does a root canal remove the nerve – here are the answers. Endodontic treatment can often be done in one or two visits and includes the following steps:

01

The endodontist examines the tooth and makes root canal treatment x-ray, then injects a local anaesthetic. After the tooth is anaesthetized, a small protective rubber is applied to isolate the tooth from saliva and other plaque during treatment.

02

The endodontist opens the hole in the crown of the tooth, cleans the pulp and prepares the canal for the insertion of the filling.

03

After the canal is cleaned and shaped, the endodontist fills the root canals with a material, usually a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. This material is reinforced with cement to ensure complete sealing of the root canals. In most cases, during root canal treatment temporary filling is used to cover the open cavity. The temporary filling is removed by the prosthodontist before placing the crown.

04

After the last visit to the endodontist, patient returns to the prosthodontist, who places a crown on the tooth or performs a tooth restoration, after which the teeth regain their original function.

Recommendations after root canal treatment

Follow the endodontist’s instructions carefully. When the root canal treatment is completed, slight tooth discomfort may be felt – this is normal. However, if there is severe pain, swelling or heaviness that lasts for more than a few days, it is recommended that you call your doctor.

With proper care, most endodontically treated teeth will be as durable and long-lasting as healthy teeth. Important to know:

/  After endodontic treatment, you should avoid chewing or biting with the tooth that was treated until the prosthetics dentist restores the function of the tooth. An untreated tooth is very vulnerable and can break or crack.
/  Maintain regular teeth care – brushing at least twice a day with a toothbrush, interdental floss and visiting the doctor for regular check-ups.
/  In some cases, after endodontic treatment, teeth may become painful again, or the infection may return months or years later, despite the success of the treatment. In this case, repeating the endodontic treatment procedure can usually save the tooth.

Re-treatment of root canals

1/  New injury, deep decay or a cracked or broken filling can lead to a new infection in the root canal. In some cases, the endodontist may discover additional very narrow or bent canals that could not be seen and treated during the initial procedure.

2/  All teeth are treated, but sometimes the teeth cannot be saved and tooth root removal must be done because the root canals are not accessible, the roots are severely decayed, there is no adequate bone support for the teeth, or the tooth cannot be restored. However, advances in the field of

3/  A microscope is used for re-treatment of root canals to help detect and treat all root canals.
