Children's dental treatment with sedation and anesthesia
You may wonder what is dental sedation and why is it needed. A child may not be afraid of dentists, may not be afraid of the tap of a needle, but not all children are able to stay calm for more than 30 minutes in a dentist’s chair. The treatment process requires care and attention, so every movement of the child can impact the treatment.
In this case, for more complex procedures, we recommend treating the child with general or mask anesthesia.
This is not sedation, which is available only for adult patients.
For the little ones, the anesthesiologist of our clinic applies narcosis, during which the child falls asleep completely for 30 minutes or about 2 hours (time depends on the procedure).

Frequently asked questions about a mask or general anesthesia procedure
How to prepare for mask or general anesthesia procedure?
The patient can not eat or drink 6 hours before the procedure.
If the child uses medication, it is necessary to notify the anesthesiologist.
Dress the child comfortably and lightly so that they can be undressed easily.
Who will perform the anesthesia procedure?
A licensed anesthesiologist is working at “VIN Vilniaus implantologijos namai” clinic, who will anesthetize the child during dental treatment and will be there during the entire procedure and monitor the child’s condition. In this way, the anesthesiologist will be able to control the child’s sleeping period.
What does the child feel during the procedure?
During dental treatment with mask and general anesthesia, the child sleeps peacefully and does not feel anything.
What are the risks?
If you do not warn the anesthesiologist about diseases of the nervous system, allergies or if the child arrives sick, complications may occur. They are not fatal, but only emergency or hospital doctors will be able to help the child. Therefore, parents must provide as much information as possible about the child’s condition before starting the procedure.
How soon does the child wake up?
After dental sedation, the child wakes up quickly (after 15-20 minutes). However, you need to stay in the clinic, in a specially designed room, for another hour and fully recover. When the child is fully recovered and it is confirmed by the anesthesiologist, you will be able to go home.
Waking up after anesthesia - how does the child feel?
After waking up from anesthesia, the child may seem confused and lost. Often children cry because they do not understand what happened. After surgical procedures, the taste of blood may be felt in the mouth, the child may feel nauseous, and he may also feel pain if a tooth extraction procedure was performed.
Usually, the doctor prescribes painkillers, so you need to give them to your child without waiting for the pain to start.
What to do after the procedure?
After full recovery in the clinic, you can go home. Immediately after the procedure it is allowed to drink liquids, but in small sips, because it can cause nausea.
After the procedure, you should go straight home. Although the child may seem alert, due to the effects of the medication, coordination may be impaired, nausea may occur.
After returning home, it is allowed to eat, but it is advisable to eat food that is easier to digest. The child should remain calm, not exercise.
Intravenous sedation for adults
Intravenous sedation is usually used for adults – the patient does not fall asleep, but is relaxed, calm, does not feel pain, is not afraid. This is not general anesthesia.
General anesthesia for adults is used only in exceptional cases, when it is necessary to perform particularly complex and long operations (over 4 hours).
The main advantage of IV dental sedation is duration control and guaranteed success. This method is suitable for both complex operations – implantation, tooth extraction, sinus lift, dental abscess incision and drainage – and simpler procedures such as teeth cleaning or whitening. During sedation, the patient is connected to a pulse monitor, an oxygen meter, a blood pressure cuff is put on and his condition is monitored. If necessary, an electrocardiogram is also performed.
Sedation is completely not dangerous, but it is necessary to inform the anesthesiologist if you have diseases of the nervous system, have a cold, fever or take medication. It is also not possible to perform sedation if you are under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or are allergic to anesthetics.
